  • How to use the metaverse? Only if it is to entertain, according to a Sortlist study

The metaverse, an idea that was long reserved for science fiction writers, has come to occupy the minds of entrepreneurs and fans of technology and marketing.

At Sortlist we are used to managing countless amounts of data that explain trends in the world of marketing. This means we couldn't just watch the metaverse unfold.

That's why we decided to survey users in Belgium, Germany, Spain, France Buy Email List and the Netherlands to find out what they expect from this virtual world, see what they think about how to use the metaverse, if they want to participate in it and if it's really a thing of the future or just one more trend.

Our most recent study reveals that:

More than half of those surveyed would not trust a virtual world.
Almost 70% understand what the metaverse is.
Most see virtual worlds as places to " escape the real world ."
Women (91.43%) are more aware than men (88.54%) of what the metaverse is.
NFTs are still the subject of debate for many; 61% of those surveyed would not think of investing in them.
Nearly 60% of the general public say they know what NFTs are. Of these, men are more informed than women (76% vs. 46%).
The metaverse represents a way for women to escape from the real world (58%), while for men it represents the future (53%).
Users 54 and older were more aware that the metaverse was a virtual world (63%) than younger users 25-34 (59%).

People Speak: What is the Metaverse?
Our idea behind this report came from a simple question: do users really know what the metaverse is?

We decided to survey the general public about their perception of this virtual world, and from there, proceed with specific questions that could help paint a bigger picture.

Do users know that Facebook has changed its name?
65 % of users surveyed across Europe were fully aware of Facebook's name change. 65.63% of the men surveyed knew that the company had done so, compared to 63.81% of the women.

These numbers correlate closely with the results of our previous Metaverse Survey for Businesses, in which we found that the majority of companies understood that the virtual world was primarily aimed at men .

Another curious fact that emerges from our study is that the general public understands the new name of the Facebook company better than marketers.

We have left an open question for users and marketers to write what they think the new name for Facebook is.

Nearly 90% of the general public mentioned “Meta”. In contrast, only 81% of marketers mentioned “Meta”. 12% of them added “I don't know / I'm not sure” as an answer, something that was not seen in the general public survey.

By changing its name, Meta also secured a new purpose for itself that goes beyond Facebook's mission of connecting people.

Its own website expresses it this way: "Our company's vision is to help bring the metaverse to life , so we changed our name to reflect our commitment to this future."

    Understanding the metaverse
Our survey indicates that this view has been seemingly transparent to users, with 66.67% of respondents saying they understand what the metaverse is.

In addition, users in Spain are the ones who know the metaverse the most , since almost 80% confirmed knowing what it is. Users in France are the least aware of it , as barely more than half of those surveyed (55%) had any idea of it.

It seems that there is still confusion between the meanings of "Meta" and "metaverse".

When asked to define the metaverse, that is, the virtual world, just over half of the users were correct. However, that didn't stop a whopping 26% from saying it was "the new name for Facebook."

A small fraction also think that the metaverse is "linked to Web3" and that it is a "new Google".

    Idea Perception
    It's a virtual world 54.32%
It's the new name of Facebook 25.93%
    All are correct 7.41%
It is linked to the Web3 5.35%
    It is a cryptocurrency 4.12%
    It's a new Google 2.88%
In this sense, the metaverse is not without its surprises.
